“Food for Fines” benefit hosted by Duke Libraries

In partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, the Duke libraries will forgive $1 for every unopened, unexpired and non-perishable food item donated during their “Food for Fines” drive.

The drive runs from October 10 through the 26th and the Duke libraries will forgive up to $25 worth of fines.

No fines? No problem! Anyone can donate to the drive. Read more about it on the Libraries’ blog, and thank you for your support.

Hurricane Relief: Sign up for Fall Break Volunteer Trips

The message below was sent to students

Dear students,

Many thanks to all of you who have reached out to express your desire to help those in need recover from Hurricane Florence. While Durham was spared from much of the impact of the storm, many communities in North Carolina were not so lucky. Your dedication to supporting our neighbors across the state is wonderful to see.

Plans are coming together for student volunteer trips to Carteret County over Fall Break. Currently, plans are in place for two disaster relief trips, to be held Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 7. We have room for approximately 30 students (undergraduate or graduate) per trip. During the trips, students will coordinate with the local Boys and Girls Club on service activities such as yardwork, debris removal, cleaning, painting, or moving furniture and other items. All volunteers will receive orientation and safety instruction.

Interested students can find out more and sign up now using this online Qualtrics survey: https://duke.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0f7fKQGEEQKPRcN

The deadline to complete your registration is Wednesday, October 3, at 9 a.m. Spaces for volunteers will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, and all volunteers must sign a liability waiver. If the maximum number of volunteer slots for each day is reached before that time, the Qualtrics application survey will close for additional submissions. We are continuing to explore ways to help and will be sure communicate any additional volunteer opportunities as well.

I want to again acknowledge Elaine Madison, Director of the Community Services Center and Nancy Kelly, Director of Community Engagement and Events for the Nicholas School, for co-chairing Duke’s relief planning events. You can find more information on ways to support our broader community on Duke’s website: https://reliefefforts.duke.edu/

Thanks for all the ways you are able to contribute.

Larry Moneta

Update 1: These trips are made possible with funding from the Office of President Vincent E. Price

Update 2: A story about these relief effort trips has been posted to the Nicholas School website.
